Let’s just float away…
Ok, so I first got put onto Organized Noize through one of my frat brothers and I’ve been a fan ever since. I felt a few cuts off “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” (“Crumblin’ Erb” especially) , but it wasn’t until “ATLiens” that I realized how ill they were with the production. I eventually got put onto Sleepy’s Theme (what up Mauri) which lead me to Society of Soul and today’s smokey filled classic, “Blac Mermaid”.
Side bar: Sleepy’s Theme and Society of Soul were both branches of the whole Dungeon Family movement (Organized Noize, Outkast, GoodieMob, Mista, Coolbreeze, WitchDoctor etc..). If you don’t have “The Vinyl Room” or “Brainchild” you’re really doing yourself an injustice (so stop bullshitin’)!
I can’t help but feel the need to roll something up every time I play this song because it really gives you that feelin that your floating (or is that the blueberry????) . Sleepy does a great job setting the tone while Debra Killings steals the show IMO (even if she’s only doing background). The kicker is George Clinton who prophetically states, “You can tuna fish, but you can’t tune a….guitar”. Float on ya’ll, float on.
