Can I get a soul clap?

What the fuck happened ya’ll? Somewhere between 1997 and 2007 the music we held so near and dear to our hearts turned into this week’s “Aunt Jackie-Soldier Boy-2-Step”. My days of listenin to the “Top 8 at 8″ are over so basically all I listen to is old shit. Old shit and new shit that wasn’t necessarily written by Ne-Yo, Sean Garret or ………..Ne-Yo and Sean Garret. So hears what I’ll do. Since I know your fiendin for that good ole soul music, I’ll give you a daily dose of pure unadulterated funk. It might be an old album cut that never got the shine it should’ve, or a rare b-side that you used to break weed on, or a ill remix that you used to have on maxi-single (WOW)! This is where your soul get’s sanctified.

Today’s word is straight out the book of Revelations. In fact, that’s exactly what I had when I realized that I had been sitting on this cut for all these years. People who know me (my wife included) know I have a certain fondness ( some say infatuation) with the beautiful Janet Jackson, so it’s only right that today’s gem comes from the artist formerly known as Charlene. “One More Chance” (originally released as a bonus cut on the “If” remix single) embodies all of the great elements of the vintage Jam/Lewis/Jackson combo that was virtually unstable for much of the late 80’s and 90’s. It’s what I call a mid-temp ballad, real lush and smooth. Vocally, Janet stays in her lane and shows real emotion as opposed to the ooh’s and ahh’s of her recent releases. The hook has a definite MJ quality about it too (maybe because the original version was  written by Randy and produced/performed by the Jacksons from their “Victory” album).  That (coupled with the layers of “shoo-bee do do doo’s”) makes this easily one of my favorite Janet slow jams.

  1. this Janet song is dope. brings back some memories that can only be reflected upon in a tub of bubbles and a glass of bubbly. Thanks for reminding me about the type of soul that bought me into this world….

  2. Earl,
I’m feeling your emotions on the beats and magical vintage vocals… I remember those days of washing dishes listening to Janet jackson with you making Pancakes, then waiting for the top 8 at 8. Things have most definetly changed. I’m true to deep vocals for life. Eveyln Champagne King, Alicia Meyers, Angela Bofill, Jocelyn Brown ,Roberta Flack… they just don’t make them like they used to.. Keep the samples that folks are using(looping) ALIVE and play their pain and love stories over any technology that will allow it to be heard!
